A Warning for Blackburn Residents

Over the last few months, Ottawa Police have been working on several break and enter crimes in Blackburn Hamlet. This is to make residents aware and to call in any suspicious persons observed in the area.

A few incidents have been committed at night, usually on the weekends. Some of the homes which have been targeted back onto pathways or park areas. Residents are not home, and thieves target small items which are easy to carry away. No suspect description is known at this time.

Several homes have been targeted during the daytime. The suspects are one male and one female, both described as having shoulder length brown hair and a slim build. The female has been seen knocking on doors in the areas of the break ins.

I am asking residents who observe suspicious persons or who answer the door to canvassers with no ID, to call police immediately.

In addition, residents are requested to ensure all doors, including the garage, remain locked at all times. Ensure the basement and all other windows are secured. Alarm systems, window bars and deadbolt locks which lock into a reinforced door frame are recommended.

Please pass the word to neighbours.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Ottawa Police Service.

An organization calling itself "Canadian Council for Safety and Families" is canvassing the Blackburn area selling CPR courses door to door. Any claims made that the Blackburn Community Association is sponsoring or otherwise endorsing this organization are false. This same group circulated through Blackburn in 2008, calling itself "Educational Partners Association". For more information, please refer to last week's EMC newspaper (July 22nd, page 9) and visit the Better Business Bureau website where the group is listed under its older name.

ANOTHER NOTICE
Police are investigating six cases of theft in the Orléans area this week that all have a similar pattern.
Ottawa police said Thursday that in all the cases, a female is targeted after parking her vehicle at a shopping centre or school. When the victim returns to her vehicle she finds that one of the tires is flat.

COMMUNITY HALL EXPANSION WORK-GROUP

We are seeking volunteers to join a working group that will plan for the potential expansion of the Blackburn Community Hall. We have begun meetings with a small group of volunteers but need additional interested residents in order to take the next steps to get the project rolling.

If you can spare a couple evenings a month to meet and volunteer a little of your time you can shape the community and one of it's central facilities and meeting spaces.

If you interested please send an note with your coordinates (E-mail, phone) to hall_expansion@blackburnhamlet.ca. This is an exciting project and we need your help and input. Volunteer now and let's talk about what IS possible!

Ottawa Light Rail

In addition to the many public consultations that will occur between now and service delivery, we always welcome the opportunity to meet with citizen groups to discuss the project in detail and address individual concerns. We have also provided the Ottawa Light Rail Website, a Facebook group, and Twitter as means for ongoing engagement and consultation, all of which can be accessed through www.ottawalightrail.ca.

We have recently designed a graphic "button" that will link directly to the LRT project site.
You can see it on the City's website here: www.ottawa.ca/tunnel.
